Nordkapp kommune and Visit Nordkapp are collaborating to develop Knivskjellodden hiking trail on Magerøya island, Norway with the goal of obtaining the "National Tourist Trail" label from the Norwegian Environment Agency (Miljødirektoratet).
The objective of the art project:
The goal of the art project is to paint and profile an eight cubic meter container that will be placed in the tourist area, at the parking lot at the start of the hiking trail. This container will be used for trash and other waste solutions. The container will be kept indoors during the creation of the artwork. We aim to bring life and color to the Knivskjellodden area, as well as motivate visitors to collect the garbage. With this project we want to show that art can have positive impact on the natural area as well as visitors behaviour.
It is estimated that about 10 000 people visit this hiking trail yearly, and almost 20 % of them are chooosing to stay overnight on the trail or parking lot. An important part of the initiative is to promote the ideas of sustainability by encouraging visitors to pick up trash along the trail as well as the shorelines and deliver it to the newly established waste management point. This point will consist of one garbage container (8 cubic meters), that must be designed in such way, that it minimizeses environmental impact and aesteically blends into the natural surroundings. Through this project, Nordkapp kommune and Visit Nordkapp hope to not only improve the visitor experience but also preserve and protect the unique natural environment at Knivskjellodden.
